Managing of a Unix system

The Unix operating system is especially suited for linguistic- textual analysis. The host available by CISADU is a Pentium system (RAM 64 Mb, HD 2 Gb) based on Unix SCO Open Desktop operating system. This facility is suited for intensive data processing and is available to those who are involved in research projects.

Network Access

CISADU supplies an access to Internet and to the Network Resources, WWW, E-Mail, Discussion Lists, Terminal Access to Network Hosts.

Those who are interested in this resources can ask for an account at the Center and become known user of the system.

You can make the request at the Center, filling up an application form and signing the scientific Network GARR rules.

Software Applications Courses

CISADU organizes Software Applications Courses on Departments' demand for groups of max 8 users.

Other courses than those who are next listed, can be organized too.

The requests for A.Y. 1995/96 must come into the end of March 1996.

Ms-DOS and Windows

This is an introductory course with the follow aims:

• explanation of how the Ms-DOS operating system works;
• frequently used and advanced commands;
• explanation of how a Window system works;
• the main Windows applications.

Training on personal computer expected.

Each course will last 8 hours, distributed in 4 days.

Unix

This is an introductory course with the follow aims:

• explanation of how the Unix operating system works;
• frequently used and advanced commands.

Each course will last 8 hours, distributed in 4 days.

Word Processor

This is an introductory course with the aim of explaining how a software for word processing works, with care to Word for Windows. Course's organization:

• basis of texts processing;
• base and advanced commands of Word for Windows.

Each course will last 8 hours, distributed in 4 days. Knowledge of Ms-DOS and Windows requested.

Internet

This introductory course has the aim to introduce the participians into the world of Internet. It will also introduce Internet resources and applications, such as electronic mail, transfer files, log on to remote databases.

Course's organization:

• a short history of Internet,
• IP addressing, network protocols,
• e-mail, discussion lists, telnet, ftp, gopher, archie, Word Wide Web.

Each course will last 8 hours, distributed in 4 days.

HTML
HyperText Markup Language

The course is aimed at explaing the basic principles of "generic coding" and particularly Standard Generalized Markup Language. This will be a necessary introduction to HTML, as application of SGML.

Course's organization:

• HTML and the World Wide Web;
• DTD HTML
  • HTML document (HEAD, BODY elements)
  • BODY content (HEADINGS, PARAGRAPHS, LISTS, TABLES, etc.)
  • LINKS (to other pages, to images)
• a project for a WWW server

Each course will last 8 hours, distributed in 4 days.
Knowledge of Ms-DOS and Windows requested.

Hardware-software Advice.

CISADU gives advice about the acquisition of hardware and the choice of the best pattern for the task to take upon.

The staff of CISADU supplies also information about application software on the market, especially about the packages that are available at the Center.

Application software with special requirements can be developed within research projects, in which CISADU is involved.

Text processing and formatting.

CISADU supplies a service of text formatting and camera ready. The files can be supplied in one of the most common Word Processors.

The staff of the CISADU provides a service of information retrieval through the Internet resources in the field of the humanities.
