From: bernhard.palme@univie.ac.at Subject: Reservierungen Wiener Papyri Mon, 2 Jan 2012 Dear Colleagues, The reservation catalogue of the Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library shows that to date more than 3,500 papyri have been reserved for publication by scholars. Many of these reservations date from years or even decades ago. Some colleagues have reserved dozens, a few even hundreds of texts. In contrast to these high figures, the number of papyri that are actually published is relatively modest: on average fewer than 80 papyri of the Collection are published yearly. In order to facilitate editing the numerous important texts the publication of which has been blocked by old reservations, some of which may no longer be relevant, the Papyrus Collection is now making official the following general rule, long in place informally: reservations of papyri will only be made for a period of five years, after which they will expire automatically. The extension of reservations is possible if editors have made demonstrable progress (for example, in the form of a draft manuscript). In such cases editors are requested to contact the Director of the Collection at the time of the expiry of the five-year period. In order to avoid disturbing acting editorial work on Vienna papyri, the start date of the five-year period will be 1st January 2012, in other words, all existing reservations will automatically continue until 31st December 2016. Colleagues who have reserved papyri will not need to request an extension to their reservations before this date. I would however be pleased to hear any news you may have about ongoing projects and plans for future publications (welcome also in CPR, MPER and Tyche). On the other hand, if you have reservations for papyri that you no longer realistically expect to publish, we would be grateful to be informed of that, so that these papyri can be assigned to other editors. Kind regards from Vienna, Bernhard Palme Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT !!! First Coptic Orthodox Theological College to be accredited in the modern world! It is with great delight that I can announce St Athanasius Coptic Orthodox Theological College has been accredited as a recognised teaching institution (RTI) of the MCD University of Divinity! This is a wonderful achievement for our Theological College which was established through Papal Decree number 21/29 just under 11 years ago and is the culmination of several years of hard work by many dedicated individuals. Through the tireless work of the SACOTC Academic Board and Council, SACOTC embarked on a journey of nearly four years to achieve this endorsement, and realise the aspirations of the College community to become a recognised teaching institution of the MCD University of Divinity. This recognition means SACOTC is officially the first Coptic Orthodox Theological College to be accredited in the modern world! More importantly, we have been accredited through an organisation who just recently in their own right were approved to become the first 'Specialist University' in Australia! To be recognised as one of the member teaching institution of the MCD University of Divinity will add significant credibility to SACOTC, giving our awards wide recognition and allowing our students to go on and do further theological studies to obtain Masters and PhD's if they wish. The MCD is an old and very well respected academic teaching body, having celebrated its centenary in 2010. Since its inception, it has been committed to providing Theological education, and represents the standard by which theological education in Australia is judged. In its own right, SACOTC is an important Orthodox Theological institution that is dedicated to promoting the traditions of the Coptic Orthodox School of Alexandria and in many ways is unique to Australia. SACOTC has much to offer in the field of theological education in Australia, and this official recognition now allows us to offer interested students the opportunity to study and appreciate theology from a Coptic Orthodox point of view and undertake units of study that are unique in their rich Christian heritage. SACOTC is blessed to have an extremely well qualified and dedicated faculty, who have inspired their students through their own example, and instilled in them a love for learning about theology and divinity. We are thrilled about this very significant achievement, as this marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for SACOTC. We will begin by offering a Diploma in Theology in 2012, online courses in 2013 and in the future expand to offer higher awards such as Bachelors, Masters and even PhD's God willing. Our newly accredited Diploma in Theology will begin on February 27th, 2012 with God's grace. Semester 1 timetable, and dates for the Open Day and Orientation day will be published in Epsajee in the coming weeks.

I regret to inform the group of the passing of a prominent Coptologist, Fr. David Johnson, S.J. on November 24, 2010. He was the Congress Secretary of the 6th International Congress of Coptic Studies in Washington D.C. in 1992. He was an inspiration to all his students and a pillar in our field. His work on the History of the Coptic Church in late Antiquity was his greatest contribution in Coptology. He will be surely missed as a scholar and as an inspiration to us all. Sincerely, Hany N. nieuw verschenen / vient de paraître / newly published : Adam Łajtar, Jacques van der Vliet, Qasr Ibrim: the Greek and Coptic inscriptions. The Journal of Juristic Papyrology Supplements, vol. XIII. Warsaw: Raphael Taubenschlag Foundation, 2010. IX+336 pp. ISBN 978 83 925919 2 4. The natural citadel of Qasr Ibrim in Northern Nubia occupied for thousands of years a strategic position between Egypt and the Middle Nile region (the present-day Sudan). In Late Antiquity, it was the political centre of an independent kingdom, Nobadia. Following the Christianization of the region in the sixth century, it became the see of a bishop, for whom a magnificent stone-built cathedral was erected. Towards the year 700, Nobadia became politically integrated into the southern kingdom of Makouria, which had its capital in Old Dongola, but Qasr Ibrim remained the residence of a ‘viceroy’, the eparch of Nobadia, who played a pivotal role in the contacts between Christian Nubia and Islamic Egypt. The capture of Qasr Ibrim by Shams ad-Dawla, Saladin's brother, in 1173, was a dramatic event that inaugurated the decline of the Christian kingdoms of Nubia. This book brings together the Greek and Coptic inscriptions found at Qasr Ibrim during the excavations of the British Egypt Exploration Society, undertaken between 1963 and 2008. It contains over 90 inscriptions from the period between the sixth and the twelfth centuries, a majority of which are stone monuments that are edited here for the first time. Each inscription is reproduced, translated and provided with a full commentary; extensive indices enhance the accessibility of the material. Most of the inscriptions are of a funerary nature (tombstones), including a series of epitaphs commemorating bishops, whereas others include building inscriptions and apotropaic texts. Together they present a vivid picture of the mainly clerical élite of this Christian centre at a crossroads between Africa and the Mediterranean, revealing patterns of commemoration and in-group status maintenance. The book can be ordered through Oxbow Books, http://www.oxbowbooks.com/ Price: £ 75.
